Who creates management standards?
The ISO series of management standards is created and maintained by the International Organization of Standardization (IOS) located in Geneva, Switzerland. The OHSAS 18001 standard is developed and maintained by the British Standards Institute. BSI operates much like the ANSI organization in the United States. International standards development began in the early 20th century and has evolved as a method to standardize system world wide. On a periodic basis the IOS meets to review and revise standard to more closely meet current requirements and ideololgy.
What is the purpose of management systems?
Management systems standards exist to provide a blueprint of how organizations should manage those activities that are critical to the quality, environmental and safety aspects of their businesses.
How does a company utilize the standards?
Organization who have been successful at robust implementation of the standards have built a new organizational culture designed to be pro-active rather than re-active. The standards outline the minimum set of requirements an organization should have in place for the management system to be effective.
